It's Back - The Official S/Boards 2009 Footy Tipping Contest

Posted: 17 Mar 2009 19:18
by fromdownunder
The Stampboards AFL Footy Tipping Contest is starting for the 2009 season, and all members are welcome to join in the fun.

Last year, the winner, Clino, was from the USA and had never seen an AFL match in his life, so anybody can win. We had over 30 starters last year, and had a really good time. Let's try to break the 50 barrier this year - it might get me a 4th grain of sticky rice as payment.

If you have a few hours to waste, here is the (huge) thread where we played out the competition last year:

http://www.stampboards.com/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=4914

And here is a complete list of last years prize winners:

Round 5 Suprize Prize (Most Winners) - MargoZ
Round 5 Surprize Prize (Least Winners) - Slayer
First to 50 (Dontated by Glen)- Clino
Leader at halfway (Donated by Glen) - Clino
First to select 8 winners in a designated Round - Glen Stephens BOO!!!
First to 100 - (Donated by Glen) - Clino
Closest Winning Margin Surprize Prize- Collingwood by 1 point Mr Boggler
Funniest Post (Donated by Glen, CTO Hawthorn 1996 AFL Booklet.) - jayemcee
First to select no winners, least number in Round 22 (Donated by Glen CTO Richmond 1996 AFL Booklet. ) - annwiggy - 2 winners, and beat out slayer by posting earlier
Last Place Champion (Donated by mrboggler) prof2000
3rd Place Champion (Donated by Mr Boggler) - 121 winners sherro
2nd Place Champion (Donated by Mr Boggler) 123 winners Lakatoi4
Winner (donated by Glen) 124 winners Clino

Join up and have some fun - no skill needed, just five minutes required once a week to post who you think will win the eight matches. And you do not need to know anything about Australian Rules Football to play.

And anyone comng in late can join in for up to eleven weeks after the season starts, although you will be at a disadvantage tp those who came in from the beginning.

The Footy starts on 26 March, so get in early.

Don't wait - subscribe now. No skill is required to play, so overseas members are definately welcome, as long as you pick Geelong every week .

And of course, it is completely free.

The Rules:

A list of all forthcoming AFL matches will be listed each Monday (or Tuesday if there is a Monday match) during the season.

All you need to do is predict who will win each of the eight matches to be played over the following weekend.

One point will be awarded per correct selection. No points will be awarded for any drawn matches (unless somebody actually predicts a draw of course).

The total number of correct selections will be aggregated over the entire season and the winner(s) shall be the person(s) who picks the most winners of the 176 games over the season.

All AFL results, the progressive AFL ladder and a progressive list of where you stand on the Stampoards tipping contest will be posted weekly.

All predictions must be posted and board time-coded by 6:00PM Australian Eastern Standard Time each Friday (if there is a Thursday match, the Thursday deadline will apply). Late entrants will recieve the "away" team for any match where the deadline has passed.

Posts may not be edited after 6:00PM on the night the round starts.

If a member does not post in a particular week, or misses the deadine above, he or she will be awarded the away (second named) teams as his/her selections.

Any member who does not post for three weeks running, or for six weeks in total once having joined will be considered to have withdrawn from the competition.

Members will have up until round 11 to join the competition. Any member joining after Round one will get an averaged aggregate total of all existing competitors as a starting score.

If there is a tie for any of the prize positions at the end of the season the winner will be chosen by a countback. So if a tie occurs at the end of Round 22, the winner will be determined by who led the competition at the end of Round 21. If still a tie then the leader at Round 20 etc....

Any member who will be away during the season has the choice of being automatically given the "away" teams as their selections, or may select for all the weeks they will be away in advance. Go here:

http://www.stampboards.com/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=11479

for the complete 2009 AFL fixture. This will give you all the matches to be played while you are away.

The winner will be announced the Sunday evening immediately following the completion of Round 22 on Sunday 30 August.

If this is unclear in any way, please post your concerns and I will clarify anything you may have a problem with. I discovered a long time ago that I am not perfect - not even close.

So, away we go with Round 1:

ROUND 1
THURSDAY, MARCH 26
Richmond v Carlton

FRIDAY, MARCH 27
Hawthorn v Geelong

SATURDAY, MARCH 28
Collingwood v Adelaide
Brisbane Lions v West Coast
St Kilda v Sydney

SUNDAY, MARCH 29
Melbourne v North Melbourne
Port Adelaide v Essendon
Fremantle v Western Bulldogs

Just pick your 8 winners and post them on this thread by 6:00PM AEST Thursday 26 March, (Board Time) and post your winners once every week until the end of August.

PRIZES IN THIS COMPETITION

Glen wrote:These will be awarded based on fromdownunder's official adjudication at the end of the final round.

First Prize is a $A100.00 credit voucher with Glen Stephens for absolutely whatever you want.

Second Prize is a Large 48 page Stock Book - donated and mailed by mrboggler of Croydon Vic .

Third Prize is a 16 Page Stock Book - donated and mailed by mrboggler of Croydon Vic

Wooden Spoon Prize for whomever comes last is yet to be decided - it may depend on how APPALLING your final score is!

As per last year I will also throw in a few small random prizes in selected rounds.

My (real) tips for round 1:

Richmond
Geelong (Revenge!)
Collingwood
Brisbane Lions
Sydney
North Melbourne
Essendon
Western Bulldogs

That's how easy it is to play. Just do that once per week. Any nasty comments about Geelong will be subject to Moderator sanctions, bans and edits. Any nasty comments about Hawthorn or Collingwood are welcome. :D

alltorque, you missed tipping the Richmond v Carlton match. I suggest that you repost and include this match.

Now, having done that, I will NOT be auditing tips during 2009 and emailing the tipster or advising on the Board that errors have been made as I did last year. Life is too short. So, in future, if anyone leaves a match out, or somehow tips for the wrong round (yes, it happened at least once), well, life is full of sadness.

Google Ben Cousins for an answer to this question.

Well, that's what he did last year - and won the whole competition (he didn't have a dart board - I asked him). Why mess with success? All you supposed Aussie Rules fans, beaten by a Sep.

And BTW, thanks Ron (Mr Boggler) for stumping 2nd and 3rd Prizes (and maybe another wooden spoon?) with nice Stock Books again this year and providing real support for this competition again.

To be honest, I basically DID make my choices last year with my eyes closed. I always thought that was the key to my success.

I have no prior history with the teams and the rivalries and the past successes and failures, and I have no loyalties to any of them.

Cheers,
Peter

This got a considerable amount of discussion before we started last year, and it was universally rejected. If we did that, it would not have been a Stampboards Tipping Contest at all - all the posts, the patter, the banter, the mini prizes (eg prize for funniest post of the year) and the surprise prizes which I randomly threw in during the season, to make sure that people kept up to date and actually read the thread.

We really thought that it would have become just another sterile "office tipping contest" with no interaction within and between members of the Stampboards community. That not what we want.
