Thanks for your efforts, Norm, and Kevin in support, and to all prize donors. It's been a fun way to spend ten minutes on a Friday afternoon. Perhaps next year I should spend 15. Congrats to all the winners.
It's also great to see our international friends getting into the spirit too. I believe Mark Twain once visited Melbourne and remarked that Australian Rules would be the world's sport if it hadn't been invented in such a backwater. With any luck we might make some converts!
Thanks too to Ann for her kind offer. I have followed up through email.
See you all next year! Go the Lions...

This was my first crack at it, but now on to
football in the USA where they play even when
it is snowing and the temperature is below 0º F.
I had fun and appreciate all the work that went
into the Footy Tipping Contest, but cannot believe
how fast the 22 weeks went by. I must be getting old !
Looking forward to do better next year.

I thought I would keep interested overseas members up to date with the finals results, and when Geelong eventuially become Premiers again, I will post in BIG font:
Adelaide 166 d Essendon 70 (Essendon are now out)
Geelong 96 d Western Bulldogs 82
Brisbane 111 d Carlton 104 (Carlton are now out)
Carlton led by over 5 goals (30 points) early in the final quarter, but Brisbane ran all over them towards the end.
Today's match is St Kilda v Collingwood.

Re: It's Back - The Official S/Boards 2009 Footy Tipping Contest
My tips for this weekend.
Adelaide v Essendon, Esssendon only scraped into the finals and have no hope.
Geelong are too good to lose this one to Western Bulldogs, who do not have an accurate forward structure
The hard one of the round, but Brisbane to narrowly beat Carlton in the "close one"
St Kilda did not finish on top for no reason, should beat Collingwood
will make selections for next week after I see team sheets, but my impression is that Footscray and Collingwood can plan for Maniac Monday

Now, mind you, my oldest child (new dad) is 27 and my youngest child (Volume I Issue #5) will be 3 in December. It wasn't all that long ago that dad got out of the shower to discover that Mackenzie (Issue #4) had used her mother's purple tole paints on herself and on the white walls, the carpet and the baby gate. Re: It's Back - The Official S/Boards 2009 Footy Tipping Contest
My tips for this weekend;
Brisbane a shoo in, too much finals experience and skill in the team for the Westen Bulldogs to have any hope of lingering longer in September. Footscray need to learn to kick straight, too old and no real form players. All Alermanis tricks are known to Brisbane, Brown at centre half forward too big to hold, Black too good, great form, and Voss will be the good news story of the year, Bradshaw rather than Hahn any day, and Lake is due for a shocker.
My tip for the flag this year
Adelaide, red hot form high scoring team who have hit the form at the right time of the year> Even Colliewobble supporting feral fans wont bother to turn up to watch this match. The "Mercy Rule" should be invoked, as the Pies have lost a quarter of a team, so no cohesion, and no hope.
Happy now, PeterS, otherwise known as "Mr Cruel"

Re: It's Back - The Official S/Boards 2009 Footy Tipping Contest
A great season - and an overdue summary and thank you for Norm and Kevin!
We had Brits, Americans, Europeans, Kiwis, Asians and Canadians all adding their selections each week. Not to mention lots of folks from NSW and Queensland etc who were simply guessing.
The 2008 winner was clino aka Peter Larson from Idaho USA. Peter took the lead from round 6, was never headed, and ended up with an impressive 124 points.
Second place in 2008 went to Lakatoi4 - a NSW resident who also has never seen an AFL game.
The results for 2009 were, incredibly, the SAME 2 collectors in reverse, coming first and 2nd respectively!
Despite competing with a bunch of AFL football Aussies who live and breath this stuff, these two out-tipped them all, and both ad admit they have never even seen a game - not even on television!
Ringmaster and chief cat-herder was once again fromdownunder (very ably assisted by Kevin Hedley!) and Norm had the satisfaction of seeing his beloved Geelong romp in the season with a strong finish.
There were great prizes, and good fun from all involved, and it really does show knowing NOTHING about a sport is no hinderance to accurate guesses!
Hope we get the strong interest in 2010.

Yeah Glen, the problem with those from down south, is that they have favourites and dislikes which clouds their vision. Could you imagine PeterS bidding against Hawthorn or Norm bidding against Geelong--- makes it very difficult.
This week I'm going for Geelong and Bulldogs ( see no bias in my selections.....hehehehehe)

Does anyone here have a sportsbet type account?
I saw last night on the footy show that the Saints are round about 2.5 for a win. Seems way too generous to me.
If anyone has an account with someone like that and can get locked in odds at around that please let me know ASAP, and I'll get you to pop a bet on for me if you did not mind.

Thanks peter .... 2.4 to 1 are odds I am MOSt happy with.
I am flying to Caracas tommorow and may not live to spend it on, is my worry!
Hugo Chavez is a Rolled Gold nutter, in much the same vein as Fidel Castro and Colonel Gaddaffi. We've visited Libya and Cuba in the past year or two, so adding Venezuela seemed logical to our 'Dictators Tour'. And I flew to Moscow mid year just to keep up the theme!
Caracas is the most dangerous large city on earth right now, even ahead of Baghdad, so even me, the intrepid traveller is more than a bit nervous about this one - take a read of the OFFICIAL US State Dept warnings: http://xoogok.notlong.com
Heavily armed bandits hold up taxis coming from the airport and kidnap tourists, and fake officials rob you in the airport terminal, and dozens of people a week literally, are shot or knifed dead in the city, so it will be an interesting trip.

Glen, remember to prepare lots of Mourning covers, just in case.
It may be better to post such comments AFTER you have left the country. Do we have a member/lurker in those countries? 8) 8)
And if you have the opportunity to gather a collection of Aerogrammes, unfolded, then Irish GOMC member would be delighted. Any less common country, mint and unfolded preferred (dont bother with used) as you travel to the exotic destinations.
Regards.........And do you belong to the Anti-AFL organisation????. Imagine leaving at this time of the year

Re: It's Back - The Official S/Boards 2009 Footy Tipping Contest
Now to SERIOUS football stuff. hail falling at this moment
The weather reminds us that football is a WINTER sport
Who do you WANT to win
Geelong? reward for defeating Collinwood (Now I want to see that)
St Kilda? So as to leave Footscray/Western Bulldogs as the only club with only one flag.
Geelong? They have lost enough in the last few years, seriously starting to challenge Collingwood as Losers:twisted:
St Kilda by a wide margin? So that the Bullies can lay a claim to have been the second best team this year
Cowboy Neale who is complaining that everybody remembers Barry Breen's point, but that he kicked 5 goals out of the 10 scored by St Kilda that day
All the former Geelong players who are still claiming to have been the better team all year, last year, in the 1990s and the 1980s, not to have won the Flag
Bobby Davis, who is no longer the last Geelong coach to have coached the team to a flag.

Re: It's Back - The Official S/Boards 2009 Footy Tipping Contest
The weather here in Melbourne is alternating between rain and hail. Last year I got sunburn at the Grand Final!
Despite the weather the MCG is full for probably the greatest annual sporting event in the world. Near 100,000 braving the elements (another hailstorm is just hitting my place, around 20km as the crow flies from the ground).

Is it too late to double my bet?
This is 2009 all over again I reckon - and not even quarter time.

Still, the Saints are playing the better football at quarter time and lead by 2 points.

Saints by a goal at half time. Umpiring has been excellent, apart from a slight blemish where Geelong were given a goal where the ball touched the post. Hard to blame the goal umpire though.
Tell you what though Glen, the Saints need kick straighter. They kicked 5 points in that quarter. They SHOULD be well in front.

Interestingly the superstar player of each team have really had no influence on the game for either side.
I thought yesterday in Nick had a half decent game Saints were a shoe in .. and he has hardly seen sighted all day.

Geelong won by 2 goals, with a goal after the siren. The Saints had their chances but couldn't kick straight when it really mattered.

Since my chatter about the finals last year must have put Geelong off, I decided to stay quiet this year, but now I can say it...
CATTERS!!!!!!!!!!!! PREMIERS 2009
Great match in more traditional winter type weather. St Kilda just faltered at the last hurdle.
Geelong for premiers 2010.

Re: It's Back - The Official S/Boards 2009 Footy Tipping Contest
Peter, I am sure Geelong woud love to have one more shot at Hawthorn, and make it two and two (1963 , 1989 (greatest Grand Final ever), and 2008 ). I am not actually convinced that we have another year left in us. Three years of awesome football must take a lot out of the people involved.PeterS wrote:Norm, Hawthorn had a year off for reasons of diversity. Next year we will be back.

I thought that obscene language was not permitted on the Board 8)
The High School I went to had an eel as part of the school crest. I seem to recall it was blue and yellow. Anyway it matters not if they play the mob from Brisbane or from Mexico - the result should be the same.

Re: It's Back - The Official S/Boards 2009 Footy Tipping Contest
I saw bits of the game (damn stamps getting in the way again) and it looked pretty good to tell you the truth. A very close contest and it could have gone either way as I see it, but good on Geelong for winning (which is all that counts in the end ).
BTW - I must see a full game live at some stage
A big couple of weekends in Sydney coming up:
Parra to win the Rugby League Grand Final next weekend.
But for the REAL game, the game they play in heaven - tomorrow Sydney Uni to beat Randwick and win the Shute Shield for the 5th. year in a row 8)
