Even further away here bonfiregirl, but I am willing to wager that it means something like defeats, demolishes, or destroys.......or some other way of saying "beat".

I do have a question, this is foot(y)ball. Why are the scores so high? Can someone explain to me the scoring?

If only we had had another 5 minutes (or a couple of the 6 players missing that played in the GF) and we would have had you Norm!

I, and the whole Hawthorn membership (currently over 45,000), am supremely confident about the season after last night. I listened to a few interviews with the likes of Gary Ablett and other players and you would have sworn they had LOST the match.

Oh, I could have some fun with that one - but they would probably banish me.

You are right about the d. it means defeated.

With Australian Football the scoring is 6 point for a goal and 1 point for a behind. At each end of the field there are four posts - the two central ones are very high and outside them is another set of two posts.

Goals can be scored by any player from anywhere in the field. It does not matter what height the ball is as long as it goes between the central posts. That is 6 points.

Behinds can be scored in three ways: by kicking the ball between the two outside posts but not within the central area; by htting one of the two central posts; and by a defending player putting the ball between any of the posts.

Simple

Come on you people who think it is REAL football - do better than that :!:

I like this explanation of Australian Rules from the 'toxic custard' website:

The game dates back 1858, the idea being a game that would keep cricketers busy during the winter. Some of the teams have been playing since before 1860 (and boy, are they tired).

The basic aim, as you might expect, is to win the game by having the most points. A goal (6 points) for kicking the ball through the two big goalposts; a behind (1 point) through the smaller posts, or if it's touched on the way through.

The game is divided into four quarters of about 25 minutes each. The pitch is oval in shape. The ball is oval as well, which makes it bounce in various unpredictable and entertaining ways.

Players wear no padding, and fairly skimpy clothing which the ladies (and some gents) seem to like. Despite the lack of padding, people hardly ever get killed.

:D :D :D :D :D

so you always put the team name first that won the game then?

(I'm just getting well into Rugby, now I am going to totally confuse myself with trying to get to grips with this game!)

For posting the results, yes I do. it makes life easier when compiling the weekly totals for everybody and updating the Board. you will see as the season progresses.

For actually listing the coming weeks matches, so you know who to select from, the team that will be playing at their home ground is listed first.

So, a player does not need to be holding the ball to score, right? That would explain (to me) the high scores. I would imagine that the scores will get smaller (more like 60's) as the season goes on...

Not really, although sometimes in very wet weather the scores will be lower as the ball get's heavier, and harder to kick long distances. In addition, some teams play very defensive football by "flooding" the backline with all of their players (the defensive end of the ground - and there is no offside rule) making it harder for teams to score generally. Sydney, Fremantle and Port Adelaide tend to use flooding methods and you will often find (as above - see the Sydney score) that scores at games involving these teams can be considerably lower than games where teams who play more attacking football.

Players generally are holding the ball when they release it to kick goals, but goals can also be scored by soccering the ball off the ground. Any of the 36 players in the ground can score a goal (provided they are kicking to the correct end, and grounds are about 180-200 metres long, and 125-150 metres wide at their widest point, and are of obloid shape.

Just for interest sake, the highest ever VFL/AFL score since first starting in 1897 was by Geelong (237 points) and the lowest was by St Kilda (1 point)

I'm just making things worse, aren't I?

One more match later tonight, and week one will be complete. 21 weeks to go then *sigh*

To newcomers, each round is usually more compact - no Thursday matches, and no Sunday twilight matches, so bear with us for the slow market driven four day first round - it annoys many of us as well. So keep posting.

Are there any members also taking part in the afl Dreamtime competition?

http://dreamteam.afl.com.au/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

If so we could perhaps set up our own little League within that, I'd be no danger to anyone, my position after Round 1 was 119,424.

I dont want to hijack this topic here so if there is any interest I will start a new topic, or if interested you could email me.

A prize for whoever finishes up in last place at the end of the season. Last year the prize was, literally, a wooden spoon. I am certain that we can come up with something worse this year.I have quite a few ancient English Cigarette Cards I am dying to get rid of...
